Developing diagnostic assay to reduce mortality rate in RDEB-SCC patients

Invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a leading cause of death in recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa patients. Early diagnosis of SCC in RDEB patients remains a challenge, since the presence of numerous large chronic wound and scar sites, together with a not straightforward choice of biopsy site, can require histopathologic evaluation of multiple biopsies. We are developing non-invasive and large-scale skin screening and monitoring methods to allow early detection.
