Developing diagnostic assay to reduce mortality rate in EB patients

Invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a leading cause of death in recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) patients. Early diagnosis of SCC in RDEB patients remains a challenge, due to the presence of numerous large chronic wounds and scar sites. As a result the choice of the best biopsy site is complicated and histopathologic evaluation may be required for multiple biopsies. We are developing non-invasive and large-scale skin screening and monitoring methods to allow early and precise detection.
